The Low Country Art of Pearce W. Hammond

Gullah Fisherman by Pearce W. Hammond (American 1941 - ) ©2008 by Pearce W. Hammond. The special talents of self-taught artist, Pearce W. Hammond, lie in his primitive paintings which are so reflective of low country life and peaceful times gone by. From his studio in Okatie, South Carolina overlooking the tidal waters and marshes of the Chechessee River, he draws inspiration, mood, color and subject matter that are captured in his unique paintings. Using bright primary colors, acrylic paints, pen and ink, and other mixed media, including crushed oyster shells, many of his paintings depict African Americans (Gullah Culture) from the coastal sea islands of South Carolina shrimping, fishing, gathering oysters, and living off the land.
